I love leftovers. I love the way spaghetti sauce tastes better the second time around. I love buzzing into the house late and warming up some leftovers to fill my family’s grumbly stomachs. I only have one problem with leftovers—putting them away. I am lousy at figuring out spatial issues. Say I have this wonderful pot of chili and I grab a container to store the leftovers in. The beefy, yummy concoction flows into the bowl but it doesn’t fit. The container is full and the chili just keeps coming. Odds are very good I’ve spilt some on the counter, lost the spoon in the bottom of the pot and I’m spastically looking for another container to absorb the leftover’s leftovers. I’m obviously not a good judge of when too much is really too much.
Jesus is a strong believer in leftovers. When He looks at our lives, He doesn’t want you to have a good life or even a full life. Jesus came so that you may have a life that is overflowing! Really! Imagine Him in His kitchen cookin’ up a storm. His arms are flinging things, and stuff is flying and everything looks like a blurr. Of course, Jesus’ kitchen has gobbs of counter space, the slickest countertops, and all of the latest gadgets. You’re not sure exactly what He’s cooking, but it smells amazing. You can tell He is using only the best ingredients. There’s buckets of joy and peace stacked up over by the window and near the back door you see boxes of beauty, wisdom and perseverance. Then your eye catches His spice rack filled with jugs of accomplishment, struggle, adventure and contentment. At first you’re not sure what Jesus is cookin’ up but then you realize it’s life. Jesus is pulling all the best things together to make the life He longs to give you.
You’re stunned for a moment, but then as you look around it seem like something is missing. Just then, Jesus lifts up his mighty right hand and yanks on a lever hanging from the ceiling. With a “WHOOSH” a huge load of love drops out of the ceiling into this giant pot that Jesus is happily stirring. He catches your eye and motions you to come closer. As you stand right by Him, Jesus begins to tip the massive pot in your direction and say, “Here ya go! Here’s all the good stuff I’ve been cookin’ up for you! Hope you’re got something big enough to haul it away.”
You’re amazed at the gift Jesus has prepared for you. There’s more glorious blessings in that one pot than you have ever imagined. You frantically look for something to catch it all in, but all you showed up with is a coffee mug. You didn’t expect to receive from Christ anything more than the salvation you’ve already been given. So you hold your puny mug beneath the pot as the blessings come pouring out only to see the blessings you missed spill on the floor.
If only you had lived in anticipation of the abundant blessings of Christ instead of expecting the mundane. In John 10:10 says, “…I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” Get rid of your puny coffee mug and open yourself up to the full life Christ intends for you. Let the abundant life fill you to overflowing…leftover and all!
