DEVOTION OF THE WEEK: God is Bigger Than Legos

For me, Legos were multicolor building blocks that we threw in a giant tub in the basement.  These days Legos are intricately designed engineering marvels complete with the latest technology.  One look at the complex apparatus on the box covers inspires any Lego-maniac to tackle what appears to be an impossible building project.  So how do you turn bags of little pieces into a Lego marvel?  You follow the directions.

But what if there were no directions?  What if there was no picturesque box cover?    What if the only direction you had was someone by your side saying “Don’t worry I’ll show you.” ?  Would you sigh with relief and say “Great!  Let’s go!  Show me how.”  Or would you snatch the box away as your mind fills with thoughts of suspicion and distrust?  I might think

  • ·         “Do you know what you’re doing?”
  • ·         “How do I know you won’t show me how to build it then take it away from me?”
  • ·         How do I know you will stay here and see this project through?”
  • ·         How do I know it’s even safe to do this?”

The bottom line is if you are like me, you would want more than just “I’ll show you”.  Unfortunately to move forward you are left with one of three choices:

1. Wait for some complete directions so you can have control over the situation.

2. Dive in and make something out of the things you’ve been given so you know it’ll turn out your way or

3. Trust.  Trust someone to show you the way.

Not surprising, God is really big on directing those He loves towards the splendor of His promises with nothing more than a “I’ll show you”.  Take Abraham.  One day the Lord God Almighty  comes to Abraham and tells him He will bless him and make him into a great nation.  To explain how, God says in Genesis 12:1 “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you”  You will notice the distinct lack of directions, instructions, or even the name of the location they were headed.  All Abraham got from God is “I’ll show you”.  Abraham took one step and then another and God showed him the way.

What about you?  Do you let God show you the way or are you charging off without a thought to what direction the Lord may have in mind for your life?  Maybe you know you are blessed and have the pieces to do more but you’re waiting for God to give you complete directions.  Why not try asking God to show you His way or maybe more importantly, EXPECTING God to show you the way?   The Lord has placed blessings and gifts in your life not for your purpose but for His purpose.  Think about that.  Let the Lord show you the joy of living a life filled with His purpose and His promises by taking just one step at a time.
