DEVOTION OF THE WEEK: God is Bigger Than…a Leaky Roof

One day during a particularly fierce thunderstorm, I noticed a splatter of water on my glass top end table.  After further examination, it was obvious my roof had a leak.  Grabbing a kitchen bowl for the spot, the problem was temporarily resolved with a reminder in my head to get somebody to fix the problem.  But as often happens in my scattered life, I forgot.  The storms were not so fierce, the bowl was removed and all seemed to be well until the day I saw a small puddle on the glass top table.  Low and behold, that pesky drop was back and needed a much larger bowl.  The leak was not a catastrophe; it was just an irritation that needed to be repaired.

I think sometimes our faith life can have leaks.  I know mine can.  I don’t mean the leaks that can leave you wondering where God is in the middle of a hardship.  I mean the little leaks that sneak up unexpected.  I find these leaks most often in my thoughts.  When I am focused on what can go wrong more often than what can go right- those thoughts are not from God.  I’m not suggesting that you should not be cautious; planning for possible mishaps is good.  But at some point focusing on what can go wrong moves from being “plans” to being “fears”.   Fears, big fears and little fears, are not thoughts from God.  2 Timothy 1:7  says “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

There is something about the BIG fears in our life that can allow us to pull up the faith reserves.  When a devastating hardship crashes into your life you might consciously reach out to God to help you rip free of the fear.  That’s the Spirit of God within you bringing you God’s love, and power resulting in a sound mind.  There are few things that affirm my faith like feeling peace in the midst of chaos.  Such a blessing.

But not all fears are gargantuan.  Actually, most fears are pesky little leaks in our faith that drip, drip, drip on our God given sound mind.  They sound like:

  • ·         “What if they get mad?”
  • ·         “I’ll never get done in time.”
  • ·         “Is that all there is?”
  • ·         “I can’t fix this one.”
  • ·         “I just want everyone to be happy.”

The temptation is to let these small fears drip into our lives undetected.  But let’s face it.  If we are thinking of these fears, we are not focused on God’s Spirit of power, love and a sound mind.

Fearful thoughts, big and small, need to be taken to the Lord in prayer.  Seriously.  The Lord is in control and ready to give you guidance and peace through the time on your knees.  Don’t let fear drip through the fortress of your faith.  God has not given you a Spirit of fear.  He has given you hope through Christ in ALL things- big and small.
