DEVOTIONAL OF THE WEEK: God is Bigger Than…a Bad Hair Day

My hair has a mind of it’s own.  Every morning I pull out an assortment of brushes, hair care products and electrical appliances and go to battle with my hair.  Regardless of my desire for a specific hair style, my hair always has final say.  If I want it to be straight, it curls.  If I want if to curl, it goes straight.  Too often the only result is a mess.  A majority of the time I end up stuck with a bad hair day, and my only hope is that tomorrow I can wash away the mess and start all over, fresh.

Do you wish that all the messes in your life could be cleaned up and started over everyday?  There are so many times I really want a do-over.  Yelling at my kids, ignoring a friend, or wasting money usually ends with me wishing I could change my actions.  But do-overs are something we don’t expect in life.  And if we are blessed with one, we certainly don’t expect another one.  Why?  Because people hold grudges.

But God never holds a grudge.  Lamentations 3:23-24 tells us God’s mercies are fresh every morning.  Each morning as you wake up, God is waiting for you with a huge bucket of His mercy.  It’s filled with God’s great love, gentle kindness and unending forgiveness.  How sweet to start each day grabbing the bucket and dumping it over your head- soaking up God’s mercy from head to toe.

Unfortunately, it’s easy to leave the bucket untouched.  Instead of soaking up God’s mercy, we walk through our day still holding on to the ugliness from yesterday or the day before or the day before that.  God is always ready to move past yesterday but our own thoughts are what can hold us back.  Thoughts like:

“I bathed in God’s mercy yesterday.  I shouldn’t get more again today.”

Or “     Yesterday was so bad I can’t imagine that bucket is able to wash it all away.”

Or even   “I think I’ll save that bucket of God’s mercy because I may need it tomorrow.”

The truth is God’s mercy is bottomless.  His bucket is always big enough and never runs out.  Our God gives endless do-overs.  One might even say that do-overs are the foundation of our Christian faith.  God loves you so much that He never tires of giving you a fresh start.  How ever many new beginnings you need, God is happy to provide them.   It doesn’t matter if yesterday was a bad work day, bad family day or bad hair day.   Today, God wants to wash that mess away and make you good as new.  Praise God for do-overs!
