As a preschooler, my daughter, Heidi, loved to play hide-n-seek. She would hide and after a few moments of peace and quiet, I’d go seek for her. It was great fun. Although there were times Heidi told me I was “doing it wrong”. She’d explain, in her 3 year old voice, that I looked for her in the wrong places. So she would take me by the hand and tell me exactly where to look for her. “First look under the chair,” she’d say, “Then look behind the door. Then walk over here and find me in the closet.” I gotta admit, seeking sure is easier when you know exactly where to look.
Of course most of us when we are seeking do not have a clue where to look. Seeking Jesus can be like that. He’s not trying to hide but maybe Jesus has always eluded you or maybe He’s difficult to see during hard times. Or maybe through your wandering, you’ve gradually lost sight of Him. Loosing sight of God can happen to the strongest of faith. It’s not that you don’t believe in Him as your Savior, it’s just that He’s gotten totally off your radar. I’ve wandered away from Jesus before- usually into massive amounts of self absorption. Then the hardest part of seeking Jesus was getting my eyes off myself and on to Him.
But what if you were not the only one seeking? What if Jesus was seeking you? Luke 19:10 says “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.” What if each day when you opened your eyes, Jesus was by your side with a whole list of ways He’s planned to seek you out and draw you closer to Him? In the morning, He could place a song on the radio that makes you think of Him and by afternoon He’s arranged an unexpected kindness that touches your heart. Later, something might happen that others call “luck” or “fate” but something tells you its Jesus, getting your attention one more time. Of course, He’s capable of being sneaky too. Jesus puts Christians in the most bizarre places to speak words of truth and encouragement to you right when you need it. And if that’s not enough, when you are filled with loneliness or despair He pushes on your strong façade desperately yearning for you to turn towards Him once again. Oh yes, Jesus is definitely seeking you.
Just like that mixed up game of hide-n-seek with my daughter, Jesus knows exactly where to seek for you. He knows where you’ve been, where you stand right now and where He can find you tomorrow. Jesus is not waiting around for you to remember to turn to Him in your times of joy or your times of need. He’s not waiting for you to remember you need Him, miss Him or want Him. Jesus is seeking you with all He’s got because after all, seeking you is the whole reason why He came. Just think: Jesus is seeking us too. What a relief.
